One Minute Motivator # 457

One Minute Motivator # 457

Hold off setting rigid deadlines for a goal until you have done some work on it.

Deadlines are great but they can cause real problems early on.

Deadlines set when a goal is set tend to be way off the mark. This causes a great deal of frustration and may even cause a goal to be dropped unnecessarily. Once you get some experience with your goal you will be in a much better position to judge what deadlines to set. You will experience a lot less grief and have a much better chance of achieving the goal if a realistic deadline is set.

Is it time to rethink a deadline?

SAY IT, LIVE IT, BE IT

What we say to ourselves out loud or in our mind, define the reality that we live.

Given that the words we use create the world we will live in here are some things to start doing right away. Start your day by saying positive affirmations out loud and sneak them in as you can throughout the day. Keep focused on your goals by looking at every new situation and asking yourself how you can use it to move closer to your goal. Lastly accept setbacks as a normal condition of working towards a goal and focus on solutions, not what went wrong.

The world you want starts with the next words you say.

Once you have a big goal, focus on the process you will go through to make it happen.

Focus on the steps you need to reach the major goal and make each step a goal.

You will stay more motivated by crossing off each small step on your way to achieving the major goal. And if things go wrong it is easier to pick up the pieces and keep going with the smaller goals.

Small steps lead to big successes.

Don’t be a hypocrite about failure.

Many of us say we embrace failure to learn from it, but run from our own failures.

By avoiding accepting failure and pushing our failures under the rug we hurt ourselves. First off, we truly do have the chance to learn what went wrong and avoid repeating the same mistakes. Secondly depending on how we avoid facing failure, we can look foolish to others. This will hurt your progress in other ways if people see you in that light. And it hurts your future. If you can’t deal with failure now, you won’t in the future and may make you more afraid to take chances that are needed to reach your goals.

If you failed, you already paid the price, why not collect your prize of progress next time around.

Avoid the “Should Syndrome”

That’s the feeling that we’re never in the right place—that we ought to be doing something we’re not: Working, studying, socializing, exercising or bettering ourselves in some way.

We need to realize that saying “no” to something—even something that sounds great on paper—can also mean saying yes to ourselves and our own needs. Every day we have a choice, and we can prioritize the things we need to do in order to be the kind of people we want.

What should you really be doing right now?

Make the decision that will make you feel good after the moment instead of the decision that will make you feel good in the moment.

Taking the course of action that will make you feel good in the long run is generally the key to success.

As hard as it is to do, when faced with long term versus short term satisfaction, go for long term satisfaction. This is where you have to reach inside yourself and tap into all the reasons you have set a goal. Step back and review all the reasons you took the course you are on and what it will bring you if you stick to it.

Long term satisfaction is the road to choose.
