One Minute Motivator # 72

Be more realistic in order to be more punctual.

The number one reason you are late for something is that we tend to underestimate how long a task will take. This backs up your day and each failure makes things worse. Researchers call this the “planning fallacy” which shows that certain people have a strong tendency to underestimate task completion times. Type A’s are better at this than Type B’s because they pay more attention to detail and tend to be more “buttoned up”. So if you want to improve your punctuality, you need to get better at estimating how long each task you are involved with, will take. Break each task down into detailed steps to get a better and more realistic grasp of the time involved. Then face up to the fact you can’t do it all, you have to cut back on your commitments. Planning to do more, doesn’t create the time to do it, time stays the same. And so does you ability to only do so much in a given amount of time. Get real about your time management and get on with your life.

Thinking of how things might have been worse will help you process a bad situation.

When something bad happens to us it is vital we take control of how we process the information. Unless we accept what happened and put together a helpful narrative, your mind will most likely put a bad spin on it that will hold you back in many ways. Thinking of how things might have been worse helps you get through the early stages of processing an event easier. Once the shock has passed, start to set up options on how to view what happened. Consider how each view will help and hurt you. Stick to the facts and do not drag old “stuff” in from the past. Pretend to be two opposing attorneys arguing the case and search for the arguments that “acquit” you. Then plan your “winning case” in your mind and move on with your life.

Change your “story” to change your life.

Almost all of us have a “story” we tell others and ourselves. It is what we think of ourselves, what we think we can do and what we cannot do. About 85% of the time it is a negative story. “I am not good at…, Nothing will ever change…, and so on.” People believe it when you tell them your story and limit the opportunities they will give you. Worse yet, you believe the story and limit yourself even more. . Step one in turning this around is to listen to what you tell others. You will be amazed if you truly listen to what you say. Then if it is negative, just stop saying it from that point on. You will make your life better right there. The same goes for what is passing through you mind. This is huge. After that, begin to craft a new story, a positive story. One that stretches you image a bit. As you get accustomed to your new story, stretch it a bit again. Keep doing this and you will have created a huge new life for yourself. And it will be based on the real you.

Thinking positive can’t change a failure, you need a new plan.

Even the most positive thoughts can’t overcome a bad plan. The fastest way to find a plan that will turn your failure into success is to copy a system that works. Imagining yourself slim won’t make you slim, but following a diet system will. Don’t hold back from copying what someone else has done. I hate to say it, but most of the times that you find a system that works; it was copied from someone else further down the line. You have heard the expression, “there are no new ideas”, well to a large extent that is true. Someone out there had your problem and solved it, so spend your time looking for that as opposed to trying to reinvent the wheel.

Make up your mind about something right now.

It is said that if you put a bale of hay on each side of a donkey, it will starve to death before it makes up its mind. Many of us have similar issues with making up our minds. There are numerous techniques to use for decision-making, but the end point of all of them is making a decision. At some point you have to do it, so do it now. In most cases you can change your mind later and I guarantee your life will work better once you make a decision on something. You feel better and thing just seem to fall into place.

Getting comfortable with what you fear is the secret to self-confidence.

Most of us would like to feel more confident is some area and have trouble building self-confidence, even when we begin to have more success in that area. Some people who are wealthy still lack confidence in their ability to make money; others have successful relationships but still lack self-confidence in maintaining a relationship. Positive self-talk doesn’t help. I still see that overweight guy in the mirror when I tell myself I am slim.

What does work is getting comfortable with what you fear. Want more confidence in relationships, get comfortable with rejection, want more self-confidence in business, and get comfortable with failure. Once you can accept the worst, you view what you have as being lower risk and worry less about it.

Explore your fears and find ways to be OK with them and then you can move into the world with a new attitude of self-confidence.

Don’t hold back ideas because they seem too simple? Many of the thoughts that you take for granted are true genius.

Once we have acquired a skill, or knowledge, we tend to downgrade their value. If we have a thought, we think anyone can have that thought. While in fact many other people would find them incredibly valuable, even profound. This causes us not to charge enough for our services, not to offer solutions, etc. This results in a loss to us and the rest of the world. Don’t be afraid to offer your opinion and thoughts even though you think they are obvious or too simple, many times they are just what are needed. Those unexpressed thoughts are a goldmine waiting to be exploited.

Find your voice and share it with the world. It is the key to your health, wealth and happiness.

Finding your uniqueness, your special talents, that incredible combination that is you and only you is how you will move the world in your direction. The world does not need another copy of what is already out there, they need something new. A new way of looking at things, and doing them. This is where you add value. You have no competition because no one can be like you. All you have to do is let the true you out and put it to work. Then you can have the world on your terms and there is no happiness like that.

How do you like the face you see in the mirror? That is the face the world sees.

Is it a positive face, a face people want to approach and deal with? Or is it an angry face, a face that drives people you need to help you, away? Try as you will to hide it, your inner attitude shows though. If you are positive inside it comes though, and of course if you have a negative view of the world this will come though. I urge you to focus on the positive in your life. This will help you attract positive people into your life and move your goals ahead faster.

One Minute Motivator # 63

One Minute Motivator # 62

Most people abandon their goals because they think they take too long. They don’t see the progress they expect given the effort they are putting in so they quit.

This is human nature. We underestimate the time it takes to do things in the short term. Didn’t your last project seem like it took forever to complete? Big goals take a long time to accomplish and we need a system to help us stay the course. It helps to break the goals down into smaller and smaller steps that you can use to measure progress. That way you can focus on the progress you are making on each step and stay motivated to complete the whole process.
