One Minute Motivator # 35

The meaning you impart to things that happen to you as you go through life controls the quality of your life. Most of the time, however, you may be unaware of the effect of your unconscious mind in assigning meaning to life’s events. It is crucial that you begin to monitor how you respond to life’s events. When something negative happens, view this situation, as a chance to learn something you didn’t know. Don’t wish it never happened. Don’t try to step back in time. Take the lessons learned and step forward.
Also keep in mind that the past, even when troubled, is invaluable to your present. It provides a solid foundation for everything you’re doing now. Learn from it – the mistakes and the successes – and then let it go. When we shift our habitual focus and meanings, there’s no limit on what life can become.

Is your mindset in positive or negative? Where your mind goes, energy flows. Which area of your life do you tend to focus on: what you have or what’s missing from your life? Rather than focusing on what you don’t have and begrudging those who are better off than you, acknowledge that you have lots to be grateful for. Developing a habit of appreciating what you have can create a new level of emotional well being and strength. Also, accept the fact that there’s a lot you can’t control. And if you focus on what you can’t control, you’ll do nothing but create more stress for yourself. So remember, you can influence many aspects of your life but you can’t control them entirely.

Are you focusing on the right things? Every day tons of little things fight for your attention. All these things fall into one of two categories: things that are important and things that are not. You will never accomplish your goals by blindly working more hours on everything that comes up. You are much more likely to accomplish your goals when you follow careful plans that measure and track priorities and accomplishments. So if you want to be more successful and less stressed, don’t ask how to make something more efficient until you’ve first asked, “Do I need to do this at all?”

In life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action. I bet you see it all around you. I do this myself sometimes. You will see someone give amazing advice to someone else and then go off and not follow his or her own advice. They just don’t take action. I guess there are a million reasons why we know what to do but don’t do it. That said, there is only one fix and that is to take action when we need to. Start now to listen to yourself, and watch what you do or don’t do based on what you said. It will be a real eye opener. Don’t try to change everything at once, take it a step at a time and give yourself credit for taking action. Move the awareness that you took action up to the top of your mind in order to reinforce your taking action.

“A Goal Without a Plan is Only a Dream…” We have all heard that a million times, yet my guess is that you are sitting there without a plan. I understand, listing goals is fun; breaking them down into a plan is not fun. And it takes time. But you have to eat that frog and do the plan or else you will still be where you are now. The good news is that making a plan is probably no where near as hard or time consuming as you think it is. We all tend to overestimate the time and trouble things like this will be. Pick one of your goals and start to break it down into a plan. What is the first step that is needed and how can you do it? There you are already on your way to having a plan to go with your goal. This will give you more confidence you can do it and will help motivate you towards completing the plan.

Brian Tracy says starting your day with a clear idea of what you want to do changes EVERYTHING. Boy is right. Imagine not having to struggle though multiple cups of coffee, trying to figure out what to wear, what to eat, and so on. What a lot of effort. And at the worst time of the day to use your mind. No wonder most people don’t seem to come to life until noon, they haven’t figured out what they are going to, much less when or how. On the other hand if you take 15 minutes to create an outline of your next day, the evening before, you wake up and hit the ground running. No confusion, no wasted effort, just smooth action taking place almost on remote control. It is like getting two days productivity out of one. Can you imagine what that does to your ability to move things ahead?

In order for you to be successful, you are going to have to become a different person. Let’s face it; right now you are not successful in at least one aspect of your life. You may not have the knowledge, experience or will power needed to be successful in the area. So that is the current you. Once you gain that knowledge, experience or will power, you will become a different person. One that will succeed. And that will be a different person. If you want success, you have to be willing to become a different person.

Scientists have abandoned the idea that academic talent is innate. And it is time you did as well. It is a seductive idea but believing academic talent is innate has consequences, almost all bad. Believing you don’t have the talent say to learn math causes you to avoid it. Avoiding things is not the way to move your life ahead. On the other hand believing you do have an innate academic talent has been shown to cause people to discount legitimate criticism and deny failure. You can’t learn from your mistake that way. If you accept that our brains change with effort and experience, you can consider new areas to explore, which in turn will cause you to improve in that area. Open yourself up to leaning new things you have written off and watch you life improve.

Jim Rohn says “We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” I believe that most of us go through life experiencing both pains at once. This is because we have not committed fully to being our best. Sure we have a few things we give our all at, but then we let the rest of our lives slide. This makes us crazy. We feel out of sorts, not fulfilled, not totally bummed. It is time to make up your mind to go for it in all facets of your life. No I am not expecting you to run laps before breakfast and then power through the day, checking off goal after goal. What I am expecting is that you pay attention to what you are doing and make an effort to at least improve in everything you are doing in the course of the day. No miracles, just improvement, and yes, fit in work/life balance and some sleep with it. Be able to look yourself in the mirror and say “I gave it a shot today”. You will see a face looking back saying “yes you did, smile, be happy and be proud”.

Failure is your friend when you are having trouble accomplishing your goal. Failures give you an opportunity to find alternative ways to attain your goal. When faced with failure we are forced to reach in and find our positive viewpoint. This will give us the ability to generate new alternatives and also ask for help. Failures help you realize that you have been following the wrong path. Once we see the failure we stop wasting time and energy on something that is not working. In the long run failure is good for our self-esteem, because we can look back on how we overcame failure and feel good about ourselves. Next time you are failing at something, stop and see if it is time to change course. Set your ego aside and look at it from a time and money standpoint. Maybe it is time to admit failure and start working on success.
